Bursary Brings New Hope to UKZN Student
UKZN Business Science student Ms Kuhlekonke Mthimkhulu was recently awarded a Profibre Siyaphambili Bursary. Currently in her third year, majoring in Finance and Supply Chain Management, her passion for learning was evident during high school, where she enjoyed tackling new topics and envisioned a future in higher education.
Steadily working toward that vision, she aspires of one day completing postgraduate studies and making a meaningful contribution to the world of business.
‘This bursary has been the greatest blessing, and I am forever grateful,’ she said. ‘Financial struggles are not easy to deal with, and the weight was heavy on my shoulders when I constantly thought about how I was going to fund my studies. Seeing my mother stress and try to slowly pay fees just so I could register was heartbreaking. I can never express how life-changing and uplifting this bursary is to me.’
Mthimkhulu believes that Profibre uplifts not only the student, but entire families and communities. ‘Bursaries are such a beautiful, life-changing experience. They allow capable students who may not have the financial means to create better futures for themselves. To be honest, receiving a bursary uplifts an entire family, not just the student.’
Her choice to specialise in Finance and Supply Chain Management was guided by her desire to explore a field full of dynamic opportunities. ‘Finance is at the heart of every business and efficient supply chains drive success. I’m fascinated by how businesses optimise resources, reduce costs and improve performance. I want to be part of that.’
Mthimkhulu recently lost her grandmother, who had been her biggest cheerleader. ‘Her passing was incredibly difficult. She always believed in me and encouraged me to push forward. I carry her memory with me every day, and I use my pain as motivation. I know she’d be proud of how far I’ve come.’
Balancing her academic life with part-time work also hasn’t been easy. Juggling lectures, deadlines and job shifts required grit and focus. ‘It taught me the power of time management and staying disciplined,’ she said. ‘I’ve learned to prioritise, stay organised and carve out time for both my studies and personal responsibilities.’
Despite her packed schedule, Mthimkhulu finds comfort in simple joys. She enjoys crocheting, watching her favourite series and teaching herself to sew through YouTube tutorials. She’s also a regular at the gym, where lifting weights helps her stay mentally and physically strong.
To students facing similar challenges, she said, ‘No matter how dark or difficult your situation may seem, keep pushing forward. We are stronger than we often realise. Every challenge is a stepping stone. Trust in yourself. Lean on God for strength – He never fails. Your hard work will pay off in ways you can’t even imagine.’
