                                    Abe Bailey Travel Bursary for Outstanding Medical StudentThis year%u2019s UKZN Abe Bailey Travel Bursary went to fifth-year Medical student Mr Divesh Singaram, who said the award was proof that investing in yourself pays off. %u2018I feel very excited and grateful for being selected for the bursary!%u2019 said Singaram.The focus of the Abe Bailey Bursary is leadership development with the trustees wanting the bursaries to be awarded to students who are academically strong and have shown exceptional qualities of leadership and service, with a good track record %u2013 not only on a campus level but also in a wider social context.Singaram says he is looking forward to the country%u2019s new healthcare system, for which he said he already has %u2018a ton of ideas%u2019 to offer. He looks forward to travelling further and developing a greater understanding of how different people think, as %u2018the more you engage with people the more you realise how much you don%u2019t know%u2019.Students Set to Spread their Wings after Receiving Overseas ScholarshipsEmma Smith Overseas Scholarships have been awarded to two students in the School of Laboratory Medicine and Medical Sciences: Ms Siyethaba Bhengu, who is studying for a Master%u2019s degree in Physiology, and Ms Nokwethaba Kweyama, a Bachelor of Medical Biochemistry Honours candidate. The Scholarship provides postgraduate opportunities to study abroad for topperforming female students who reside in eThekwini.Bhengu is preparing to travel to the University of Cambridge%u2019s Clinical Neurosciences Division in England where she will advance her ongoing research aimed at establishing the effect the genome editing tool, CRISPR/Cas9, has on curing or slowing down the progression of Parkinson%u2019s disease.Kweyama said she was proud but humbled by the scholarship, saying it motivated her to make the most of the opportunity. %u2018It%u2019s an honour to be recognised for my hard work and I%u2019m excited about the possibilities it opens for my academic and personal growth.%u2019Vincent Maphai Scholarship winner Mr Shimal Harichurn with UKZN Registrar Dr Kathy Cleland.Abe Bailey Travel Bursary for Outstanding Medical Student %u2013 Mr Divesh Singaram. Hard Work Pays Off for Hugh Africa Scholarship WinnerMr Nqubeko Mazibuko is the proud recipient of the Hugh Africa Scholarship which is named after a former ViceChancellor of UKZN who was also a professor, and a member of the Council at the University, an honorary doctorate recipient and a distinguished educationist.
