For Bachelor of Administration student Ms Lerato Xaba, receiving a Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA) bursary through the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Foundation has been about more than financial support. It has given her the opportunity to pursue her academic goals with confidence and purpose.

Originally from Pietermaritzburg, Xaba is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Administration degree at UKZN, focusing on public administration, governance and supply chain management. Her passion lies in understanding how effective administration and responsible resource management can improve service delivery and strengthen communities.

Growing up in a loving and supportive household with her parents and three siblings, Xaba said her family instilled the values that continue to shape her ambitions.

ā€œI witnessed the sacrifices my parents made to provide opportunities for us. Their determination taught me the importance of resilience, discipline and perseverance,ā€ she said. ā€œMy background inspired me to pursue a career where I can contribute positively to society and create opportunities for others who come from similar circumstances.ā€

A former learner at Carter High School, Xaba always dreamed of obtaining a university qualification and building a meaningful career. Today, she views receiving the W&RSETA bursary, facilitated by the UKZN Foundation, as a significant milestone that has enabled her to continue her studies without the burden of financial uncertainty.

ā€œBursaries are extremely important because they remove financial barriers that prevent many students from accessing higher education,ā€ said Xaba. ā€œThe costs of tuition, accommodation, transport, books and daily living expenses can be stressful. A bursary allows students to focus on their studies and personal development instead of constantly worrying about how they will afford the next semester.ā€

She added that the funding has significantly reduced the financial pressure on her family while allowing her to participate more fully in university life.

ā€œInstead of worrying about registration fees, textbooks and other academic expenses, I have been able to concentrate on my coursework and participate more actively in university activities,ā€ she said.

Like many students, Xaba has faced challenges along her educational journey. Financial hardship during her school years often made it difficult to afford essential learning materials.

ā€œBeing part of a large family with limited income meant that obtaining school supplies was sometimes difficult. There were moments when I felt demotivated, but I did not want to give up,ā€ she recalled.

With the support of her family and school, she remained focused on her goals. The transition to university also brought challenges as she adjusted to living away from home and the demands of higher education.

ā€œAt times it was difficult to focus on my academics because I missed home and the expectations of university became overwhelming,ā€ she said. ā€œI overcame these challenges by staying focused on my long-term goals, seeking academic support when needed and maintaining a positive mindset.ā€

Today, Xaba’s academic interests centre on public administration, governance and supply chain management, particularly the role of ethical resource management and efficient procurement in improving service delivery across South Africa.

Beyond her studies, she enjoys reading, spending time with friends and family, and supporting fellow students. ā€œI enjoy helping other students because I believe that sharing knowledge and encouragement can make a positive difference in someone else’s journey,ā€ she said.

Xaba also credits her faith as a source of strength and perseverance.

Looking ahead, Xaba hopes to build a career in local government where she can contribute to effective and efficient service delivery, particularly in underserved communities. ā€œMy focus is to ensure that every voice is heard and that no person is left behind, especially in decision-making processes. Ultimately, I hope to use my skills to help improve service delivery and support economic development in South Africa.ā€

As a beneficiary of donor-supported funding, Xaba is deeply appreciative of the opportunities the bursary has provided and encourages other students facing financial challenges not to lose hope. ā€œWork hard, stay motivated and do not allow financial hardship to stop you from achieving your goals. Anything is possible if you believe in yourself,ā€ she said.
