MEET TOMORROW%u2019S LEADERS18 PHILANTHROPY MAGAZINEUKZN Mechanical Engineering Student AwardedABERDARE CABLES BURSARYFor UKZN Mechanical Engineering student Mr Banele Makhasi, a brighter future is within reach thanks to the support of Aberdare Cables (Pty) Ltd, who recently awarded him a bursary. Growing up in a household where resources were limited and only necessities could be afforded, Makhasi faced the reality that higher education might remain out of reach. With a single breadwinner supporting multiple family members and his mother medically boarded after suffering a stroke, his dreams of studying Engineering seemed financially unattainable.Despite these obstacles, Makhasi remained focused on academic success, viewing education as a powerful tool to transform his circumstances. His decision to pursue Mechanical Engineering stems from both a passion for the field and a desire to make a meaningful impact. %u2018This funding has assisted me in a big way,%u2019 said Makhasi. %u2018Without the baggage of having to worry about how I will pay off my tuition, I%u2019ve been able to fully focus on my studies.%u2019Outside the lecture hall, Makhasi finds balance through reading, watching films, listening to music and spending time outdoors. He also embraces personal growth by learning new skills %u2013 like cooking and playing the guitar %u2013 and staying physically active through exercise.Looking ahead, Makhasi is weighing several possibilities to further his career. These include pursuing a master%u2019s degree, participating in internships, obtaining professional certifications such as Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or software-specific credentials like SolidWorks, and eventually becoming a Professional Engineer (PE). %u2018I know there are many options available to help me build a successful and fulfilling career,%u2019 he said.
